This month’s tips to keep your pet healthy:

Summer Pet Care Tips
It’s summer, your pets will probably be going outside more frequently and for longer periods of time. Keep these few things in mind for your pet’s health and safety:

• Certain forms of algae that are found in ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water can be toxic. If your pet likes the water make sure that you watch for signs of abnormality after a good swim.
• Some types of coolant/antifreeze products contain ethylene glycol- a substance that can be very toxic to dogs and cats even in small amounts. Make sure to keep all chemicals in an area that pets can’t access.
• Ashes from grills or fire pits can be harmful if ingested by your pets. It’s a good idea to make sure that grills or fire pits are not in an area where your pets spend a lot of time, especially unsupervised. Not only can ashes cause illness if eaten, but flames or sparks from the grill or fire can also cause serious burns.
• If you have a fenced-in yard for your pets, make sure that the fence is in good condition. Damaged areas or openings in the fence may allow them to run away or even get injured trying to slip under or through the fence.
• Letting your pets out on your deck or balcony can be a treat for them but if the balcony doesn’t have rails or the rails have spaces that are too large, pets may fall or even try to jump down causing injury or possibly death.
• Everyone likes to enjoy fireworks on the 4th of July, but it may not be the same story for your pets. Loud noises made by fireworks can scare your pets or cause injury if they are lit to close to the animal. Many fireworks can also be toxic to your pet if ingested.
